Free has different meanings according to it opposite changes .
As , when you yourself are free and not burdened or busy then you would say :free ×busy or free×burdened.
When anything is free of cost then you would say:free×expensive or free×costly.
But the actual opposite of expensive is cheap .
Anyway, you may use it with free too in that spoken English.
Well , here "free" is modifying the meaning of noun ,pronoun , state or condition, position etc., so ,parts of speech here is adjective.
