the french domination was not only based on 'economic exploitation' but also was driven by civilising misssion.
like the Britishers in India, the french also claimed that they were bringing the benefits of civilisation to the vietnamese.
they took for advantage the fact that europe had developed the most advanced civilsation and it was the duty of the advanced countries to bring the benefits of civilisation to the backward people even if it was at the cost of their culture, religion or traditions as they were seen backward and prevented modern civilization.
they realised that education was the best way to covilise the native.
