Hi,
Your answer :
The French Revolution, anticlerical and violent, began in 1789. The revolutionaries wanted to erase all traces of Christianity, so many Catholics were executed and the property of the Church was confiscated.
Later, Napoleon Bonaparte conquered Rome and the Papal States. In 1801 Pope Pius VII signed a treaty with Napoleon, leading to a rebirth of the Church in France although his freedom is still limited. After the defeat of Napoleon in 1815, the Holy See took control of most of its former possessions.
Good bye :)
