Explanation:

Surface roughness can affect friction in many ways. The amount of ‘real surface’ in contact is a function of the interacting surfaces. Given the same load, more rough surfaces have larger asperities and can dramatically increase the static friction coefficient. In a dynamic friction situation and if lubricated hydrodynamic lubrication theories are at play and the lubricant film thickness can be improved/increased with rough features (eg. Engine Cylinders).
