Friction is a self adjusting force because of the mass of the object is more then the frictional force will be more .
similarly if the mass of the object is less then the frictional force will be less.
but if external force has to be applied then the person who has to exert force should do more work , but the frictional force is automatically adjusted as per the change in maas
