जब refrigerator का आविष्कार भी नहीं हुआ था, तब ice houses का उपयोग किया जाता था।
Artificial refrigeration की शरुआत तब हुई जब Scottish professor William Cullen ने सन 1755 में छोटी refrigerating machine बनाई।
उन्होने (Cullen) Diethyl ether के container में पंप की मदद से vacuum create किया और उसे boil कर उसमे से आस पास की हवा द्वारा heat absorb की.
इस experiment की मदद से वह थोडी मात्रा में ice पैदा करने में सफल रहे. लेकिन उस वक्त इसका कोई practical उपयोग नजर नहीं आ रहा था.

सन 1805 में अमेरिकन inventor Oliver Evans ने ice के उत्पादन के लिए closed vapour-compression refrigeration cycle को describe किया।
1820 में British scientist Michael Faraday ने ammonia और दूसरे गैस को high pressures और low temperature से liquefied किया।
सन 1834 में Jacob Perkins ने पहला vapour-compression refrigeration सिस्टम पर चलने वाला refrigerator बनाया था।
यह device continuously चल सकता था।
1842 में American physician, John Gorrie ने working prototype बनाया लेकिन वह बाजार में fail साबित हुआ।
पहला commercial ice-making machine सन 1854 में invent किया गया था। और 1913 में फ्रिज को घरो के लिए invent किया गया था.

यह काम कैसे करता है, इसे समज ने से पहले आपको refrigeration cycle को समझना पडेगा।
फिलहाल हर फ्रिज में vapour-compression refrigeration system (VCRS) का उपयोग होता है।
इसमें refrigerant का उपयोग होता है। और यह buildings और automobile के air conditioning में use होता है.

Liquid refrigerant को माध्यम के तौर पर circulate किया जाता है. जोकि जिस space को ठंडा करना है, उसमे से heat absorb करके दूसरी जगह heat को छोडता है।
VCRS में 4 मुख्य component होते है।
- compressor
- condenser
- thermal expansion valve
- evaporator
Refrigerant compressor में जाने के बाद high pressure और high temperature vapour में convert हो जाता है. यह super heated vapour होती है.
यहाँ से यह condenser में जाने के बाद यह water cooled या air cooled method से heat को वातावरण में छोड़ती है। और यह liquid में convert हो जाती है.
यह saturated liquid होता है।

Condenser के बाद यह liquid expansion valve से होकर गुजरता है. यहाँ इसका pressure और temperature drop होता है। और यह ठंडा होता है।
आप को बता दे की domestic refrigerator में expansion valve के तौर पर capillary tube का इस्तेमाल होता है.
Expansion valve के बाद यह evaporator से होकर गुजरता है। evaporator से यह space की heat को absorb करता है.
और हीट absorb करने की वजह से यह vapour में convert हो जाता है।
इस प्रक्रिया में evaporator के आस पास रखी हुई चीजे ठंडी हो जाती है। और evaporator में से निकली हुई vapour वापिस से compressor में चली जाती है।
लेकिन compressor में जाने से पहले यह partially vaporised होता है, और ठंडा भी होता है, इस लिए इसे fan की मदद से complete vapour में convert किया जाता है।
क्योकि compressor में छोटे प्रमाण में भी liquid पार्टिकल नहीं दाल सकते, अगर ऐसा होता है, तो compressor के फटने की संभावना होती है।
