The Friedel–Crafts reactions are a set of reactions developed by Charles Friedel and James Crafts in 1877 to attach substituents to an aromatic ring. Friedel–Crafts reactions are of two main types: alkylation reactions and acylation reactions. Both proceed by electrophilic aromatic substitution.[2][3][4][5]

A Friedel craft alkylation is an example of an electrophilic substitution reaction where carbocation attacks on an aromatic ring such as benzene which gave rise to the formation of Toluene. This reaction generally carried out with the help of Lewis acids like AlCl3, and FeCl3. Friedel craft alkylation is used in the synthesis of several benzene derivatives. For example

C6H6 + CH3Cl/AlCl3 ------> C6H6CH3 + HCl
