soil is formed by the rock, chemical and biological changes that keep taking place over a period of time. first, the bare soil starts breaking up due to the process called weathering .this may be physical and chemical as well as mechanical in nature. the dead materials of plants and animals form the bacteria which is acted upon by several like organic materials, to form microorganisms and make the soil rich in minerals and nutrients. water percolates down these layers and distributes the minerals creating humus .soil formation is a slow process and it may take thousands of years to create just a few centimetres of soil. the weathered rocks that need to be left undisturbed in one place for a long period of time.
