Given : From a rifle of mass 5kg, a bullet of mass 50g is fired with an initial velocity of 30m/s.

To Find : What is the  initial velocity of recoil of the rifle ?

Solution:

Apply  conservation of momentum

initial Momentum = (5kg + 50g) * 0  = 0 kgm/s

, a bullet of mass 50g  is fired with an initial velocity of 30m/s.

=> mv =  (50/1000) 30  = 1.5 kgm/s

a rifle of mass 5kg  initial velocity of recoil of the rifle = v

=> 5v

0  = 1.5 + 5v

=> 5v = -1.5

=> v = -0.3 m/s

- ve sign indicates recoil of the rifle

the  initial velocity of recoil of the rifle   =  0.3  m/s
