From a rifle of mass 8 kg, a bullet of mass 25 g is fired with an initial velocity of 50 m/s. Calculate the initial recoil velocity of the rifle.

by the law of conservation of momentum,

  • momentum before firing=momentum after firing
  • 0= M(gun)×V(gun) + M(bullet)×V(bullet)
  • M(gun)×V(gun)= - {M(bullet)×V(bullet)}
  • V(gun)= -{M(bullet)×V(bullet)}÷M(gun)

v(gun) =   \frac{25 \times  {10}^{ - 3} \times 50 }{8}  \\  =  \frac{1250 \times  {10}^{ - 3} }{8}  \\  = .156

(-ve indicates that velocity of the gun is in the opposite direction of bullet)
