from the four corners of a square piece a paper of side 12 centimetre , small squares of side 1 centimetre are cut off . the edges of this are bent up and join to form a container of height 1 centimetre . what is the capacity of the container ? if squares of 2 centimetre are cut off what would be the capacity ?

Given side of a square piece of paper (a) = 12cm

i) If 4 squares of side 1 cm from 4 corners of paper then the paper should be like figure 1.

Dimensions of the cut paper:

Length (L) = a - 2 = 12 - 2 = 10 cm

Breadth (B) = 10 cm,

Height (H) = 1 cm

Capacity of the container (V) = LBH

= 10 cm × 10 cm × 1 cm

= 100 cm³

= 100 litres

ii) If 4 squares of side 2 cm from 4 corners of paper then the paper should be like figure 2.

Dimensions of the cut paper:

Length (l) = a - 4 = 12 - 4 = 8 cm

Breadth (b) = 8 cm,

Height (h) = 2 cm

Capacity of the container = l × b × h

= 8 cm × 8 cm × 2 cm

= 128 cm³

= 128 litres
