After 4 s, the particle projected with the velocity 3 m s^(-1) will be at 3 × 4 = 12 m away from the initial position.

Let the other particle have the velocity - 5 m s^(-1) since both are projected in opposite directions. So after 4 s, this particle will be at - 5 × 4 = - 20 m away from the initial position, i.e., 20 m away in opposite direction of the first particle.

So the separation between the particles is,

12 - (- 20) = 12 + 20 = 32 m
