Electric power is generated in power stations, by rotating a conducting coil in a magnetic field through a source. For example in hydroelectricity, water is thrown from get heights on the turbine which makes it rotate, thus we get an induced electro motive force. Again, in Tidal power stations, the turbine is rotated through rising and falling tides.
Now this power is stepped down to 11kV first and then stepped up to 132kV. Then it is stepped down to 33kV to supply to the heavy industries and 11kV again to supply to light industries. Then this 11kV is stepped down to 220V and supplied to our houses.
We need to pay for this electricity we are using to companies like CESC (Calcutta Electricity Supply Corporation), which supplies us the current.
