Frozen water (ice) has less density than liquid water. How does this property of water affect life on earth

Due to this property, in polar regions, ice chunks float over water. Due to anomalous expansion of water, beneath the ice chunks, the water remains relatively warm and allows aquatic life to flourish. Fish and other aquatic organisms are allowed to live in proper temp conditions.
