The upper chambers on each side of the septum are auricles, the lower chambers are called ventricles. Auricles have thin walls and act as receiving rooms for the blood while the ventricles below act as pumps, moving the blood away from the heart.

Each one is attached to the anterior surface of the outer-walls of the atria (i.e.left and right atria). They look like wrinkled pouch like structures. Their purpose is to increase the capacity of the atrium and also increase the volume of blood that is able to contain. Auricle is also called atrial appendage.

The ventricles of the heart function to pump blood to the entire body. During the diastole phase of the cardiac cycle, the atria and ventricles are relaxed and the heart fills with blood. During the systole phase, the ventricles contract pumping blood to the major arteries (pulmonary and aorta).
