It is an hormone that is produced by pineal gland and It regulates sleep and awakeness in humans but in the case of plants it defence against oxidation stress. Its production is influenced by the detection of light and dark by the retina of the eye.Secreation of more melatonin makes us sleepy, that happens when we are in dark. That is why we get sleepy when lights are off! It marks healthy and longitivity of our life.

Hope it was fruitful, hit a thanks or brainlist!
