Blood:

  • Blood is a liquid connective tissue.
  • It consists of blood plasma and blood corpuscles.
  • Blood corpuscles are of three types:
  1. Red Blood Corpuscles (RBC)
  2. White Blood Corpuscles (WBC)
  3. Blood Platelets

Red Blood Corpuscles:

  • These are biconcave disc-like structures and their cytoplasm is filled with haemoglobin.
  • RBC's are manufactured in bone marrow.
  • Their life span is about 120 days.
  • After that they are destroyed by liver and spleen.
  • Their small size helps in absorbing oxygen and enables them to travel in blood capillaries.

White Blood Corpuscles:

  • These are nucleated and amoeboid cells that lack haemoglobin.
  • These are of two types: granulocytes and agranulocytes.
  • They are manufactured in bone marrow.
  • They are capable of squeezing out capillaries that destroy foreign matter.
  • They are known as the soldiers of the body.
