Functional classification of the respiratory system

Functionally, the respiratory system is separated into a conducting zone and respiratory zone. The conducting zone consists of the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and bronchioles. These structures form a continuous passageway for air to move in and out of the lungs.

Lung tissue consists mainly of alveoli(Figure 16.2. 6). These tiny air sacs are the functional units of the lungs where gas exchange takes place. The two lungs may contain as many as 700 million alveoli, providing a huge total surface area for gas exchange to take place.
