An ecosystem is a self sustaining and self regulating structural and functional unit of biosphere. Communities and physical environment constitute the structural component of an ecosystem and their continuous interactions result in its functioning. In the ecosystems, the structural components perform variety of functions and tend to stabilize an ecosystem. In the plants, green leaves photosynthesis.i.e., function as a site of food production and roots absorb nutrients from the soil. In the animals , herbivores eat on the plants and utilize the part of food plants make and in turn serve as food for carnivores. The decomposers breakdown the organic matter of dead and decaying animal and plant material in to simple inorganic products which is used up by the producers again. All the above functions are delicately balanced and controlled in an ecosystem to make it stable, self sufficient and dynamic. Thus ecosystem plays a well important role in maintaining the life on earth. Slight variations in them can easy affect on the life on earth

Functions of Ecosystem :
1. Habitat functions : ecosystems provide habitat to wild plants and animals and thus conserve biological and genetic diversity. It supports different food chains and food chains.
Production function : production of wide range of goods ranging from food to raw materials.
Importance of Ecosystem :
1. Life cannot sustain without ecosystem services.
2. Ecosystem services are the goods and services derived from natural and managed ecosystems upon which human welfare depends, and include everything from clean air and water to food and fuel.
