The mitochondria are tiny bodies of varying shapes and size distributed in the cytoplasm. It have their own DNA .The energy required for various chemical activities is released by Mitochondria in the form of ATP.

Functions :

1. These are the sites of cellular respiration.

2. They are able to make some of their proteins.

3. They carry ATP which helps in for synthesis of chemical compounds.

Mitochondria is known as the powerhouse of cell. The function of mitochondrian is to create energy for the cell and this process of creating energy is called cellular respiration. The energy required for various chemical activities (involved in cellular respiration), needed for life is released by mitochondrion in the form of ATP.
