modification of roots.,

a permanent change in structure and function of roots of a pant inorder to perform special functions is known as modification of roots.

→ there are so many root modifications.so here below are mentioned....

  1. storage roots - help in storing food and act as perennial organs. ex - daucous carota (carrot)
  2. haustorial roots - parasitic plants get their nutrients by releasing  their haustorial roots into host plants. ex - cuscuta
  3. respiratory roots - in mangrooves respiratory roots that grow vertically upwards help in respiration to plants. ex - rhizopora
  4. velamen roots - velamen roots of epiphytes are hygroscopic in nature and help absorb moisture from atmosphere. ex - vanda
  5. nodular roots - bacteria like rhizobium inhabit the nodules of fabaceae plants and fix nitrogen from atmosphere forming a symbiotic relation with plant. ex - arachis.
  6. assimilatory roots - some plants have roots that are chlorophyllous and perform photosynthesis. ex - taeniophyllum.
  7. prop / pillar roots - they arise from base of branch and grow into soil giving  mechanical suppourt to branches. ex - ficus (banyan)
  8. stilt /brace roots - they arise from basal nodes of stem and grow into soil to give more mechanical suppourt to plant. ex - maize.
