Functions Of Parenchyma

➜ You might have felt the softness of flowers and certain leaves. This is due to the presence of parenchyma. It is found in soft parts of the plant like root, stem, leaf.

➜ The cells of parenchyma tissue are composed of thin walled living cells .

➜ They are least specialised out of all the simple tissues. The parenchyma cells vary in shape like round, elongated, polygonal or irregular.

➜ Generally cells are loosely arranged and contain large amount of food materials since they perform storage functions.

➜ If parenchyma contain chloroplasts it is called chlorenchyma and it takes part in photosynthesis.

PARENCHYMA

  • Parenchyma are the type of simple permanent tissue.
  • The cells present in this tissue have thin cell walls which is made up of cellulose.
  • These cells are unspecialized cells.
  • These cells are living in nature.
  • These cells have dense cytoplasm.
  • There are large intracellular spaces between them.
  • It is mainly found in root, stem, leaves and flowers etc.

FUNCTIONS

It is of three types having different functions:-

  • Chlorenchyma :- It is type of parenchyma tissue which helps in performing photosynthesis since it has chloroplast.
  • Storage parenchyma :- This parenchyma helps to store the food materials in it. Example :- Starch.
  • Aerenchyma :- This parenchyma is found is stems and roots of aquatic plants with large air cavities so that they can float on water.
