Fuse wire should have higher resistance than the other wires in the circuit but it should not have high melting point. Why?

Fuse wires must have have higher resistance to resist the high current supply but whereas it must have a low melting point. Because, incase of overloading the fuse melts and breaks the circuit to prevent other appliances from any further damage.
