Gandhara style:

  • Between the first and seventh centuries CE, the Gandhara art style of Buddhist visual art emerged in what is now northwest Pakistan and eastern Afghanistan. The Greco-Roman-inspired style appears to have peaked in popularity under the Kushan era and coincided with a significant but distinct school of Kushan art at Mathura (Uttar Pradesh, India).
  • Long a crossroads of cultural influences, the Gandhara region. The area experienced intense Buddhist missionary activity under the rule of the Indian emperor Ashoka (3rd century BCE). Additionally, in the first century CE, the Kushan empire's leaders, which included Gandhara, kept in touch with Rome.
  • The Gandhara school adapted many elements and methods from Classical Roman art in its portrayal of Buddhist myths, including vine scrolls, cherubs holding garlands, tritons, and centaurs. But the fundamental symbology was still Indian.
