Gas generally doesn't escape the atmosphere because it is being held down to the ground by gravity. The repulsion between molecules is only at very close quarters. The tendency of gases to occupy a large volume comes from the way they bounce around off each other.

because of having some gases are lighter and some or heavier that is why lighter as it Rises to the surface of earth and heavier objects till on the earth surface in my opinion gas have an effect of gravity and there is another reason of which when the gases are heated up they are become lighter and that's why they give raise to the Earth surface and cold gases achieve their places
