heating metal salts in a dry test tube are observing the preliminary way of detecting the presence of certain radical (ions) in it. while most metal oxide decompose upon heating, to produce metal oxide and brown coloured nitrogen dioxide and oxygen sodium nitrate (and potassium nitrate) upon heating decompose to produce sodium nitrite is stable to heat.
