Gases do not have definite shape and volume. This fact is explained below :

In gases, the molecules which make them are positioned or oriented very far from each other. Due to it their intermolecular force of attraction is very weak. And hence for this reason gases do not have definite shape and volume. Gases take the shape and volume of the

container in which it is present.

When we take solid particles into account, we can observe that the solids have definite shape and volume.

It is because of the reason that the molecules constituting the solid are tightly packed with each other.

This results in strong intermolecular forces of attraction and hence solid is regarded to have definite shape and volume.
