Gastric acid, gastric juiceorstomach acid, is a digestive fluid formed in thestomachand is composed ofhydrochloric acid(HCl),potassium chloride(KCl) andsodium chloride(NaCl). The acid plays a key role in digestion ofproteins, by activatingdigestive enzymes, and making ingested proteins unravel so that digestiveenzymes break down the long chains ofamino acids. Gastric acid is produced by cells in the lining of the stomach, which are coupled in feedback systems to increase acid production when needed. Other cells in the stomach producebicarbonate, a base, tobufferthe fluid, ensuring that it does not become too acidic. These cells also producemucus, which forms a viscous physical barrier to prevent gastric acid from damaging the stomach. Thepancreasfurther produces large amounts of bicarbonate and secretes bicarbonate through thepancreatic ductto theduodenumto completely neutralize any gastric acid that passes further down into thedigestive tract.

Short notes on Gastric Juice

  • In the stomach, food gets churned and mixes with the juice secreted by it which is called gastric juice.
  • It is a fluid which is composed of hydrochloric acid, mucus and enzyme called pepsinogen.
  • The components of the juice are secreted by the different cell of the stomach.
  • The parietal cell secrets hydrochloric acid which is responsible for maintaining the optimum pH required for the pepsin mechanism.
  • The zymogen cell secrets pepsinogen which acts as pro enzyme and gets converted into pepsin with the assistance of HCl.
  • The goblet cell secrets mucus which acts as a lubricant and protects the lining of the stomach from action of HCl.
