yeah gernally they are prepared inorder to increase yeild of plant and for preventing diseases

eg bt cotton , bt brinjal
and bt means bacillus theurigenisis( spelling may vary) gene is transfered from this bacteria to plant which protect plant from insects and some other examples may be to prevent diseases
