Certain geographical features of land influenced raiders and rulers alike, to set up their capitals or kingdoms in such locations.

Mountains, valleys and cliffs provided protection from other marauding invaders and hence it was the perfect location for setting up forts and fortifications.

Proximity to sea was another factor. Other than fishing, it was a gateway for international trade.

Rivers provided water for irrigation and fertile land resulted in abundant agriculture. Kingdoms were often invaded and annexed, based on their agricultural abundance.
