It is mainly due to the rivers like Ganga Yamuna Gaghra Gomti Gandak etc

abhisharma2359: It's simply because Himalayas acts as obstruction for the monsoon winds(South western monsoon winds (the bay of bengal branch)) and causing it to rise high and in doing so loose water in the form of rainfall and hence there is more soil erosion. :)

The foothills of the Himalayas are prone to excessive soil erosion because -

• The soil layer of the foothills of the Himalayan mountain range is loosely deposited upon rocky surface. That's why the strength of the soil layer is very low against any kind of environmental agents (wind, water etc.). That's why the soil erosion is very common in this region.

• Excessive rainfall and high velocity river flow are another major reasons for the soil erosion.

• The lack of vegetation (deforestation also) is also a reason behind the excessive soil erosion in the foothills of the Himalayan mountain range.
