  • Large rivers and backwaters provide around 14,500 kilometres of inland waterways in India where, only 3,700 kilometres of these are accessible to mechanised boats.
  • LONGEST NATIONAL WATERWAYS ININDIA : The National Waterway 1 (NW-1) or Ganga-Bhagirathi-Hooghly river system is located in India and runs from Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh to Haldia in West Bengal via Patna and Bhagalpur in Bihar across the Ganges river. It is 1,620 km (1,010 mi) long, making it the longest waterway in India.

ADVANTAGES of Waterways :

  • Waterways are the cheapest means of transport.
  • They are most suitable for carrying heavy and bulky goods.
  • It is a fuel-efficient
  • It is an Environment friendly mode of transport.
  • It helps in foreign Trade.
  • The risks of accidents and breakdowns, in this form of transport, are minimum as compared to any other form of transport.

DISADVANTAGES of Waterways :

  • It is Slower than airways.
  • It can be used only in a limited area which is served by deep canals and rivers.
  • Rivers and canals cannot be operated for transportation throughout the year as water may freeze during winter or water level may go very much down during summer.
  • Inland water transport by rivers and canals is not suitable for small traders, as it takes normally a longer time to carry goods from one place to another through this form of transport.
