Given :  George takes a photograph of a rectangular window that is 3 1/2 feet tall and 1 3/4 feet wide. He prints the photograph on paper so that the image of the window is 1/2 foot tall and 1/4 foot wide.

To Find :  ratio of the area of window to the area of the image of the window

A. 1:49

B. 1.7

C. 7.1

D. 49:1

Solution:

Rectangular window

Length =  3 1/2  = 7/2  feet

Width = 1 3/4  = 7/4  feet

Area = Length * width

= 7/2 * 7/4

= 49/8 sq feet

photograph on paper

Length =  1/2  feet

Width = 1/4  feet

Area = Length * width

= 1/2 *1/4

= 1/8 sq feet

ratio of the area of window to the area of the image of the window

= (49/8) / (1/8)

= 49/1

= 49 : 1

49 : 1   is the ratio of the area of window to the area of the image of the window
