a. if she randomly chooses one of the jars, what are the odds in favour of it being one of the herbs she needs?
b. if the first jar she chose was rosemary, what are the odds against picking basil next? ( she did not replace the rosemary onto the spice rack after using it.)

Given :  Gina is cooking pasta sauce, and the recipe calls for basil and rosemary She can't see the labels on the jars of her spice rack. There are 8 jars on the spice rack

To Find : odds in favour & odds in against

Solution:

Total Jars = 8

She needs Herbs = 2

Odds in favor = Number of successes: Number of failures.

odds in favour of it being one of the herbs she needs  = 2:6

= 1:3

first jar she chose was rosemary

so remained Jar = 7

odds in favour of picking Basil  = 1:6

odds against - the ratio of the number of ways that an outcome cannot occur compared to in how many ways it can occur.

odds against picking basil next = 6:1

after choosing rosemary as the first jar,  probability that the second jar chosen will be basil =  1/7
