Abortions are legal in India, but determining the sex of the foetus is not. But finding a doctor or a sonologist who's willing to tell you the sex of the foetus is ridiculously easy. However, this can be expensive (depending how poor you are), so there are lots of people who just wait until the baby is born, and kill it if it is a girl.
