REACTION WITH ACETIC ACID:

When alcohols react with acetic acid in the presence of conc. H2SO4 at high temperature ,the respective esters are produced and the process is known as esterification.

CH3OH + CH3COOH -----conc.H2SO4--->-CH3COOH+H2O

C2H5OH + CH3COOH ----conc.H2SO4-->

CH3COOC2H5 +H2O

✍️ Ethanoic acid is warmed with ethanol in the presenceof a few drops of concentrated sulphuric acid a sweet smelling Ester called ethyl ethanoate is formed.

✍️ This reaction to form an ester is called esterification.

✍️ This reaction is also used as a test for ethanoic acid.

✍️ The reaction is slow and reversible.

✍️ To reduce the chances of the reverse reactionhappening, the ester is distilled off as soon as it is formed.

✍️ Reaction :-

CH_3COOH + C_2H_5OH ---> CH_3-COO-C_2H_5 + H_2O

♦ Ethanoic acid + ethanol ---> ethyl ethanoate + water
