Pollutant is a substance which causes pollution to the environment. Thus, the pollutants referred to as contaminants. A substance or material can be termed as contaminants or pollutants if the substances or materials having the following things.

a) The amount exceeds the normal amount / threshold.

b) Being in an improper place.

c) Being at the wrong time.

Types of Pollutants By its nature, pollutants can be divided into 2 (two), namely:

a) Biodegradable pollutants are pollutants that can be broken down by natural processes.

Example: wood, paper, materials, food scraps, garbage, leaves, and etc

b) Non biodegradable Pollutants are pollutants that can not be explained by natural processes so that will remain in that environment for a very long period of time.

Examples: glass, cans, pesticides, radioactive residues, and toxic metals.

Based on its form, pollutants can be distinguished with 3 (three), namely:

a) Solid pollutants, such as paper, tin, iron, metals, plastics, and etc

b) Liquid pollutants, eg oil spills, pesticides, detergents, and so on.

c) Gaseous pollutants such as CFCs, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, and etc

Based on its form, pollutants can be distinguished with 3 (three), namely:
