Actually food chain can be called as a linear sequence when represented on a plain piece of paper where a lower organism  is eaten by the next higher organism.

if the lower organism is not a producer(plants with chlorophyll) then it eats the next lower organism

example Grass⇒Grasshopper⇒snake⇒peacock

each of these levels or stages are known as trophic levels

now coming to food web

interconnected food chains are known as food web
