Answer:
In the story, the hermit is an impoverished outcast who lives a simple life. We are told he is "frail and weak" and is barely able to turn the soil with his spade. The hermit is a very wise man, however, and we discover why as the story progresses.
The king in the story "Three Questions" is a ruler but not an autocrat. He wants the answer to his three questions so that he wouldn't fail in any of his endeavours, but his actions, his compassionate nature, his forgiving attitude clearly proves that he wants success not for any selfish reason but for the people of his kingdom. He was determined to find the answers to his questions at the cost of his own comfort and luxury. He choose the wise hermit which showed his foresightedness and intelligence and the inherent nature of the king to do well and be good. The hermit was a wise man, who stays in a nearby village. The hermit would only see common people, so the king wore a common dress, left his guards behind, and went to see the hermit.
