Kalangs were the community of skilled woodcutters and wood craftsmen who lived in the island of java . They were excellent shifting cultivators and were very important for the people of java and it was proven when the Mataram kingdom got split in 1755 their 6000 families twere equally divided in both the kingdoms. They worked under the dutch rule till 18 th century and gradually started capturing their forts.
