The water cycle, also known as the hydrological cycle or the H2O cycle, describes the continuous movement of water on, above and below the surface of the Earth. The mass of water on Earth remains fairly constant over time but the partitioning of the water into the major reservoirs of ice, fresh water, saline water and atmospheric water is variable depending on a wide range of climatic variables.

The continuous movement of water on, above and below the surface of the earth is known as the hydrological cycle or the water cycle.

Water from rivers, seas and oceans is evaporated due to the heat of the sun. Water vapour is condensed in the atmosphere, forming clouds.

During the completion of this cycle, water passes through all the states of liquid, solid and gas. It also passes through the atmosphere, surface of the earth as well as below the surface in the form of groundwater.

Precipitation occurs in the form of rainfall and snowfall.
