He went to Cambridge
and spent three years there. Owing to poor financial condition of his parents,
Gulliver started working as an apprentice to Mr. Bates, a London based surgeon.
He continued working with him for four years and during this period he studied
Mathematics and Navigation, hoping to take a sea journey. When he left Mr. Bates, he went down to his
father: where, by the assistance of him and his uncle John, and some other
relations, he got forty pounds, and a promise of thirty pounds a year to
maintain him at Leyden: there he studied physic two years and seven months,
knowing it would be useful in long voyages. Later, he borrowed some money to
study medicine at Leyden. After his return from Leyden, Mr Bates recommended
him to join the crew of a ship named Swallow as a surgeon.
