Ali's life changed dramatically towards the
evening of his life. His only child, Miriam married and left him. She went off
with a soldier into his regiment in Punjab. This left Ali forlorn and
devastated. He was completely transformed. He stopped hunting partridges and
hares. His heart became filled with pain of separation from his daughters. Now
he lived only to get a news of his daughter. Ali was an accomplished Shikari. There was a
time in his past when he could not pass a day without hunting. His experienced
eyes could spot the partridges in spite of the camouflage. He could spot a
hare, which even the hounds failed to see.
Before his daughter eloped with a soldier, Ali was a pleasure-seeking being. He was an accomplished hunter, and loved opium. But the sudden and sad incident of his daughter's elopement changed him completely. He became a very serious and sensitive man. He gave up hunting, and his heart became sensitive to omnipresent love and the pain involved in it. His only purpose of life was now to receive a letter from his daughter. He died waiting for it. I felt very sad reading the tragic end of Ali's life. The poor soul filled my heart with pity for him.

This question is from the chapter written by
The chapter deals with the story of a old young man Ali who went to the post office daily in search for his daughter's letter.
Ali was a brilliant hunter who left hunting after he realized the pain behind separation. He had only one daughter Miriam who went to Punjab after her marriage and Ali was left all alone.
He went to the post office daily in hope of getting a letter from her daughter but unfortunately was never able to get it.
The tragic end of the story makes me feel bad about the condition of Ali and little bit angry about the postmaster's behaviour.
