Give a chemical test to distinguish between aniline and N-methyl aniline. Answer: When warmed with chloroform in the presence of alc. KOH, aniline gives offensive smell of isocyanides while N-methyl aniline does not give this test.

Aniline and N-ethylaniline are distinguished by chloroform test.

● Explaination -

Aniline on heating with chloroform in presence of alc.KOH creates phenyl isocyanide.

C6H5-NH2 + CHCl3 + 3KOH --> C6H5-NC + 3KCl + 3H2O

N-ethyl aniline doesn't give this test.

C6H5-C2H4-NH2 + CHCl3 + 3KOH --> NO REACTION
