Heya,

To be simple,

Overlapping differences are the differences in which a particular section or caste contains all the rich and high officials and a particular section which contains all poor and uncivilised people.

Example :- Northern Ireland

While,

Cross-cutting differences are the differences in which all the sections have both rich poor people i.e, people of a particular section contain both rich and poor people.

Example:-Netherlands

Overlapping:

1. Under this social difference overlaps another difference.

2.under this people start feeling that they belong to communities.

3. For e.g: black and white difference in U.S.A is a overlapping difference because the blacks tend to be poor, homeless and discriminated .

Cross cutting:

1. Under this, a social difference cross -cut and other difference.

2.under this, a group can share a common interest on one issue but are likely to be different sides on different issues.

3. E.g: in Netherland class and religion tend to cut - across other as catholic and protestants are about likely to be poor or rich
