Harivansh Rai Srivastava (27 November 1907 – 18 January 2003), known by his pet name Bachchan, was an Indian poet of the Nayi Kavita literary movement (romantic upsurge) of early 20th century Hindi literature. Born in a Hindu Awadhi Indian Srivastava Kayasthafamily, in Allahabad in the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh, in British India, he was also a poet of the Hindi Kavi Sammelan. He is best known for his early work Madhushala(मधुशाला).[2] He is also the husband of social activist, Teji Bachchan, father of Amitabh Bachchan and grandfather of Abhishek Bachchan. In 1986, he received the Padma Bhushan in 1976 for his service to Hindi literature.[3] He incorporated vocabulary from several Hindustani dialects, including Awadhi, Hindi, and Urdu, while writing in Hindi script.

Harivansh Rai Bachchan, Indian poet (born Nov. 27, 1907, Allahabad, United Provinces [now Uttar Pradesh], India—died Jan. 18, 2003, Mumbai [Bombay], Maharashtra, India), was one of the most acclaimed Hindi-language poets of the 20th century. His long lyric poemMadhushala (The House of Wine), published in 1935, brought him legions of fans. Bachchan’s public readings were attended by thousands of people, and the still-popular work was translated into English as well as many other Indian languages and was performed onstage and set to music. He continued to write poetry while teaching English at Allahabad University and working to promote the Hindi languagein the government of Prime MinisterJawaharlal Nehru. In the 1970s, Bachchan published a four-partautobiography, which also created a stir in the literary world; an abridged English translation, In the Afternoon of Time,appeared in 1998. In his later years his fame was eclipsed by that of his son, Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan.
