It is mostly animals, that are found painted inside the rock shelters of Satpura National Park, located in the Hoshangabad District of Madhya Pradesh.
Paintings of tigers and peacocks are found in these rock shelters. Tigers are supposed to represent power and is related to Goddess Kali. Peacocks on the other hand, symbols of beauty and grace. There are also paintings of people riding elephants, carrying weapons, farmers carrying their farming tools and of women dancing.
Satpura National Park is also a Tiger Reserve, set up in 1981 and covering 2,200 square kilometres of rugged ecosystem.
Satpura Tiger Reserve is important from view point of archaeology. There are more than 50 Rock Shelters which have rock paintings depicting various animals like elephants, tigers, deers, and porcupines. These paintings are about 1500 to 10000 years old and helpful in study of human evolution history in this area.
