PHOTOSYNTHESIS:

✨Definition:-

◼Photosynthesis is the process in which plant cells makes there own food in presence of chlorophyll, carbon-dioxide, water and sunlight to give out three by-products glucose, oxygen and water.

◼It takes place only in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll.

◼Photosynthesis not only produces products for themselves but also indirectly for humans and other living beings.

◼It gives out oxygen, because of which all living beings survive.

◼It also helps in the growth of the plants and animals eat plants. This is a use of photosynthesis for animals in an indirect way.

✨The procedure is as follows:-

◼During day time when sunlight falls on the leaf, sunlight gets trapped in chlorophyll present on upper layers of the mesophylls.

◼Sunlight is then used for preparing food with other elements.

◼Carbon-dioxide diffuses into the leaf because it has higher concentration outside than inside leaf.

◼Water is absorbed from soil which with osmosis and imbibition travels up to the leaves, where it gets distributed into tissues of the mesophyll.

✨The equation for photosynthesis:-

6CO₂ + 12H₂O + light ➡ C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ + 6H₂O

Except some non green plants, all green plants synthesis their own food by using the energy of sunlight. The peculiar process by which all this takes place it known as Photosynthesis.

So Photosynthesis is a special anabolic process by which plants form their own food ( starch ) using Sunlight and inorganic raw materials - CO2 and H2O.

The chlorophyll pigments are very essential for this process present in chloroplasts - the organelles of photosynthesis.

Reaction :

6CO2 + 12H2O ---------> C6H12O6 + 6O2 + 6H2O

When we combine carbon dioxide and water it forms glucose, oxygen and water in presence of sunlight.

Site of photosynthesis :

The site of photosynthesis is chloroplasts in green leaves.

Mechanism of photosynthesis :

Photosynthesis involves two phases.

  • Light phase
  • Dark phase

_________________________

Light phase :

Absorption of light energy : first of all, the chlorophyll pigments in the chloroplasts absorb the sunlight of particular amount of energy.

Photolysis of water : With the absorbed light energy, photolysis of water takes place.

2H20 ------------> 2H2 + O2 ( in presence of light energy )

So, breakdown of H2O by light yields the hydrogen and oxygen. Oxygen is a by product and not required in the process. It is removed out of stomata.

Formation of chemical energy : Light energy is converted into chemical bond energy of ATP and NADPH2. This energy is also called assimilatory power.

Dark phase :

Reduction of carbon dioxide : It occurs in the absence of light. In this, CO2 is reduced to form the carbohydrates ( starch ). This is also known as biosynthetic phase. It requires assimilatory power for conversion of CO2 to carbohydrates.

Common pathway for the biosynthetic phase is the Calvin cycle. [ diagram of calvin cycle is in the third attachment ]

First three steps require the light energy and constitute light phase of photosynthesis. Last step is not requiring in light and called as dark phase.

Factors on which photosynthesis depends :

# Temperature

# Light

# Carbon dioxide ( CO2 )

# Water ( H2O )
