Basically, river valley projects are considered multi-purposeful because they are required for irrigation, hydel power generation, to check floods, to control the water supply for usage at various distances, and it serves employment.

It helps in soil conservation, develops pisciculture, and promotes afforestation and serves recreational centers.

Of the many multipurpose projects, few are as follows:

• Bhakra Nangal dam built on river Sutlej is India’s first multipurpose project covering Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana.
• Damodar Valley Corporation built on river Damodar has 4 multipurpose dams in West Bengal and Jharkhand.
• The Hirakud dam on river Mahanadi, Odisha.
• The Tungabhadra project on Tungabhadra River at Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh
• The Rihand Project in UP on river Rihand.
• The Nagarjuna Sagar project in Andhra Pradesh.
