Quest for Theory of Everything....

Stephen Hawking was born on January 8, 1942, in Oxford, England. At an early age, Hawking showed a passion for science and the sky. At age 21, while studying cosmology at the University of Cambridge, he was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Despite his physical disabilities, he has done ground-breaking work in physics and cosmology. His several books have helped to make science accessible to everyone.

Born to Frank and Isabel Hawking, he had an ordinary childhood. But by the time he was eight he was seriously thinking about becoming a scientist. In 1959, at the age of seventeen, Hawking went to Oxford to study natural science and to specialize in physics. Later he took a Ph.D from Cambridge specializing in theoretical physics. At the age of twenty-one he contracted a rare disease, “amyotrophic lateral sclerosis”. It was a terrible disease. There was no known cure for this. In 1965, he got married to Jane .Jane liked his intelligent, eccentric and rather arrogant nature. Besides he was interesting and witty. As a student in Cambridge, Hawking used to ask unexpected and penetrating questions to the most distinguished scientists.. His reputation as a ‘genius’, ‘another Einstein’ began in his Cambridge days. He started writing a book about the universe in 1980. Before completing that book, he had to undergo a tracheotomy operation. After this operation he could not make any vocal sound. Now he continues his work with the help of a computer programme called Equalizer. This programme allowed Hawking to select words from the screen. In 1988 he published his work, “A Brief History of Time”. This book contains a number of paradoxes and unique ideas.

“I will Fly” - Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam (Detailed Summary)

“I will Fly”

- Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam

Detailed Summary

“I will Fly” is a speech which is delivered by Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. In this speech, Kalam says that the youths do not want to afraid of their future because they have an “ignited mind” with which they can conquer anything. He is going to talk about “I am born with wings”.

Before Kalam is going to deliver a speech on“I am born with wings”, he gives an account of an incident which happened in the past. Once he went to inaugurate a programme which is named as “Sasthrayaan” which means “the propagation of Science”. This programme selects two thousand students from a village and make them capable to work as engineers, scientists, civil servants, managers and doctors. For the inaugural address, he was talking about the topic, “Science Empowers the Nation”.

During the question answer session, a teenager asked a twisting question to Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. The teenager told him that he did not have self confidence. His ambition is to become a marine engineer. He wants to achieve his dream and wants to succeed in his career. In the end, he asks Kalam how can he achieve his dream.

Hearing this question, Abdul Kalam told that the teenage boy echoed the voices of millions of children all over India. Many kids do not know what will happen to their future and they have a confusion whether they can achieve their dream without any hindrance. Then he recites a poem which is titled as “I will fly” which tells that every human has “potential”, “goodness”, “confidence”, imaginative power and has the right to conquer their dream because as the poem suggests “I have wings, I will fly”.

Then Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam says that everyone is unique. Most of the children has a wish “to be unique”. But it is the society including parents does comparison of one individual with another. The result is that everyone becomes bandwagons, and a few people will be unique. So Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam end his speech by saying that the greatest challenge of today's generation is how to create “a UNIQUE YOU!”
